Dead Weight, the author’s first novel, is a legal thriller, based on true events of one hundred years ago in Charleston, SC. The novel chronicles the 1910 trial, conviction and execution of African American Nealy Duncan, the last man to be hanged in South Carolina. Humphreys spent 15 years at CBS News in New York as a senior producer and has managed the coverage of many of the events that have shaped lives over the past quarter century. He has petitioned the governor to pardon Duncan.

Severe Weather Awareness Week/Tornado Drill

Severe Weather Awareness Week will be observed March 1-5.This year it will be jointly sponsored by the National Weather Service and the South Carolina Emergency Management Division. Events of the week will include the annual statewide tornado drill. This year, the drill will be initiated by the National Weather Service through the NOAA tone-alert weather radio system and the Emergency Alert System using the TOR (Tornado) header code. The drill is being conducted in coordination with the South Carolina Broadcasters Association and the South Carolina Department of Education.
The governor has agreed to sign a proclamation recognizing the importance of Severe Weather Awareness Week.

• NWS will conduct its drill the morning of Tuesday, March 2, at approximately 9 am, and has received permission to conduct the drill using the TOR header code. The drill will be initiated as it has been in the past via NOAA weather radio, the family of services, NAWAS and EAS. Schools, families, and businesses are being asked to initiate the drill with radio warning; if by 9:15 a.m. they fail to receive the warning due to radio malfunction, they are being asked to proceed with the drill, neverthess. The Superintendent of Education will send a memo to public schools next week encouraging them to conduct the drill, and has agreed to email a reminder to schools a few days before the drill and on the morning of the
drill.
• NWS and the South Carolina Broadcasters’ Association are asking that county emergency managers help publicize that the drill will be coded TOR for an actual tornado, although a real tornado will not be occurring. Should inclement weather be indicated for March 2, the statewide tornado drill will be delayed until Thursday, March 4.
